BUILDING A GENERATION THAT CARES
______________
We believe the future belongs to people who care.
People who care about themselves.
People who care about others.
People who care about nature.
People who care enough to take responsibility.
Because people protect what they care about.
They improve what they care about.
And they lead differently when they genuinely care.
WHY WILDERNESS EDUCATION?
Nature is the greatest teacher.
For thousands of years, nature has been humanity`s greatest classroom.
- It teaches us through experience.
- It shows us what is real.
- It develops the qualities we need most.
And it connects us to something bigger than ourselves.
OUR APPROACH
We don't create challenges.
We simply return to the ones life has always given us.
Long before outdoor education become programmes, people learned directly from life itself.
When they were hungry, they learned to find food.
When they were cold, they learned to make fire.
When they needed shelter, they built one.
When they travelled, they learned to work together.
______________
These weren`t activities.
They were simply life.
And because they were real, the lesson stayed.
We believe they still do.
LEARNING THROUGH LIFE
We don't create challenges.
We let life create them.
Many outdoor programmes create activities designed to challenge people.
Our programmes begin with the simple tasks that life has always required.
Real situations
No simulations. Just meaningful work that needs to be done.
Real responsibility
Everyone contributes because everyone matters.
Real confidence
Confidence grows naturally when you solve real problems yourself.
The greatest lessons are rarely planned.
They emerge naturally when life asks something of us.
OUR STORY
A lifetime of learning.
More than forty years ago, a passion for nature became the beginning of a lifelong journey.
Before teaching others, we chose to live this way ourselves.
For four years, we lived in a hand-built hut deep in the Austrian mountains, relying almost entirely on what the surrounding landscape provided. We gathered firewood, carried water, made fire, built what we needed and learned directly from the realities of everyday life.
It wasn't an experiment.
It was simply how we chose to live.
Over the years, we have had the privilege of learning from some of the world's most respected wilderness educators and indigenous teachers, including Tom Brown Jr., Jon Young, the School of Lost Borders and traditional knowledge keepers from different cultures.
Although each tradition had its own language, culture and methods, we discovered that the principles beneath them were remarkably similar.
Awareness
Responsibility
Community
Respect
Joy
Care
Different cultures express these principles in different ways. Yet they are all rooted in the timeless relationship between people and the natural world.
For more than thirty years, we have been sharing these principles with children, young adults and adults across Europe, the United States, New Zealand and Asia.
Today, everything we have learned comes together in one place.
Wilderness Education New Zealand is being established as a not-for-profit educational organisation dedicated to helping people grow through real experiences in nature.
OUR STANDARDS
Every programme is built on the same foundations.
Whether someone joins us for a day, a week or a longer journey, these commitments guide everything we do.
Thoughtfully guided.
Qualified instructors, careful planning, small groups, and clear risk management create an environment where meaningful learning can happen with confidence.
Life is the classroom.
We don't rely on artificial challenges. We work with real situations, real responsibility and authentic experiences in the natural world.
Everyone belongs.
No previous outdoor experience is required. We create a respectful environment where every participant can contribute, learn and grow.
Learning that lasts.
Every activity serves a purpose beyond the skill itself, helping people develop awareness, responsibility, confidence and genuine care.
Everything we do is guided by one simple question:
Will this help people become more capable, more responsible and more connected to the world around them?
OUR PROGRAMMES
One mission.
Different journeys.
Every programme is designed around the same timeless principles, adapted to different stages of life and different communities.
Young people
Building a generation that cares.
Immersive wilderness experiences that help young people develop confidence, responsibility, resilience and a lifelong connection with the natural world.
Schools
Helping education come alive.
Experiential programmes that complement classroom learning through meaningful challenges, teamwork, leadership and real responsibility.
Adults
Returning to what matters.
Experiences that help adults slow down, reconnect with themselves and rediscover clarity, purpose and direction through nature.
Educators & Organisations
Creating lasting impact together.
Partnerships, professional development and collaborative programmes for schools, organisations and communities committed to meaningful education.
The greatest lessons are not about surviving in nature.
They are about living well.
BEYOND THE PROGRAMME
What stays.
People may forget the route they walked.
Or the shelter they built.
Or the meal they cooked over the fire.
But they rarely forget how those experiences changed the way they see themselves.
Confidence
The confidence that comes from doing something you once believed was impossible.
Responsibility
Understanding that your choices shape the people and places around you.
Community
Discovering that meaningful lives are built together, never alone.
Care
For yourself. For others. For the natural world.
